Beware of Spoilers
Extraction 2 commences with rescuing the critically injured Tyler Rake, played by Chris Hemsworth. His team of mercenaries, which includes Nik Khanonl and Yaz Khan, who are also playing supporting characters, dispose of him in a remote, peaceful location away from the hustle and bustle of the city. As Tyler tries to piece together his newly found life, he is tasked with a new assignment, which is a personal one.
The makers then introduce the antagonist Davit Radiani and his brother Zurab Radiani. Inflected with crime since childhood, these two brothers, following their father’s ideology together, ink a loyal squad named Nagazi. This criminal syndicate’s leverage and political reach are established in a scene where Zurab kills a high-ranking government official without consequences.
Things start moving when Tyler infiltrates the Georgian prison to rescue his ex-wife’s sister, Ketevan, and her two kids, Sandro and Nina, who is married to Davit and imprisoned alongside him. The action sequences during the rescue in the jail are breathtaking, and this is when we spot the outstanding cinematography and well-choreographed action sequences. The camera moves swiftly with Tyler, which gives us a thrilling experience.
This was an excellent start to the movie and leveled up even further on the train action sequences when Zurab’s men, The Nagazi, attacked Tyler and his team using armed men and an attack helicopter. We witness a relentless saga of hand-to-hand combat, machine gun firings, taking down helicopters, and knife stabbings.
The first half kept us on the edge of the seat with a heart-pumping intensity. The film maintains the equilibrium when Tyler and his team, Ketevan, and her two kids, fly and seek refuge in their safe house in Vienna. The action sequences are nerve-wracking and full marks to the action choreography. However, the storyline dips after this point and never recovers until the end.
Sandro Radiani, the elder son of Ketevan, is taken hostage by Zurab Radiani. Zurab contacts Tyler and calls him to a secluded location where the climax sequence is supposed to happen. We must break it to you guys; the climax is utterly disappointing. From the beginning, the built-up Extraction 2 achieved had come down crashing at the end. The finale is predictable and disappointing, with poor dialogues and average action sequences.
It was very disappointing to watch this movie end so badly. The makers really should have made efforts to improvise it. The ending feels as futile as the finale of Game of Thrones Season 8. The makers also failed to devise a potent antagonist like Zurab Radiani. Zurab Radiani’s potential as an actor was not thoroughly utilized.
Final Verdict:
Extraction 2 starts with a bang, carries momentum until the first half and steadily depreciates afterward. The chemistry between Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) and Nik Khanonl (Golshifteh Farahani) looks very adorable. Chris Hemsworth has given it all for the action, but the film’s storyline shortfalls towards the end. In our opinion, you can skip the climax and read it on Wikipedia; you will be less disappointed. Excluding the end, across the board, the action sequences look natural and scary and can numb you. Overall, Extraction 2 falls short of its prequel, with the climax being the movie’s weakest point. While the end may have been disappointing, many elements of the film were still well done and commendable.
